TRANSPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The role of the Transport Advisory Committee is to advise the Chief Executive-in-Council on broad issues of transport policy with a view to improving the movement of both people and freight. The Committee comprises a chairman and 16 members including three Government officials. The Committee supervises the operation of the Transport Complaints Unit, which is responsible for receiving and handling complaints and suggestions from the public on transport and traffic matters.
The Committee holds regular meetings to discuss issues concerning major transport policies and road traffic legislation. Some of the major issues considered by the Committee in 2003 include the transport arrangements associated with the introduction of 24-hour passenger crossing at Lok Ma Chau Control Point, Island Line Extensions, Route 7 and South Hong Kong Island Line, Kowloon Southern Link, entry requirements of taxi drivers and taxi driver pre-service training programme, review of selection criteria and marking scheme for green minibus operators selection exercises, promoting the conversion of red minibuses to green minibus operation, review of assessment of performance of bus services for 2002, measures to enhance the safety of franchised bus operation, application from the Peak Tramways Company Limited for extension of the period to run and operate the peak tramway, the New Hong Kong Tunnel Company Limited's application for toll increase, public transport fares, Northwest New Territories Traffic and Infrastructure Review, Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge, traffic improvement scheme recommended under the strategic traffic review for the central business district, rationalisation and promotion of route numbering, better coordination of existing public transport services with the East Rail Extensions, etc.
