Transport Department holds health seminar to encourage commercial vehicle drivers to pay attention to safe driving and health (with photos)

The Transport Department (TD) today (February 28) held a health seminar under the Safe Driving and Health Campaign to encourage commercial vehicle drivers to quit smoking and continue to pay attention to safe driving and health with a view to enhancing road safety.

Speaking at the health seminar, the Commissioner for Transport, Miss Rosanna Law, said that the TD has been promoting the safety awareness of road users through various publicity and education programmes. The total number of traffic accidents in 2022 was about 15 000, down 17 per cent when compared with about 18 000 cases in 2021. Roads are commercial vehicle drivers' workplace. Credit should be given to commercial vehicle drivers who drove safely to contribute to the drop in traffic accidents.

Miss Law reminded drivers to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a good driving attitude, and to have health check-ups regularly. Free health check-ups for commercial vehicle drivers are provided under the Campaign. Since the programme launched two months ago, about 1 800 commercial vehicle drivers have registered through the electronic platform and completed the health check-ups. From March onwards, the number of health centres providing free health check-up services will be increased from the existing 11 to 18, to bring more convenience to commercial vehicle drivers.

For today's event, the TD also invited Specialist in Respiratory Medicine of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Dr Veronica Chan to share healthy lifestyle tips with participants, as well as Centre in Charge of TWGHs Rehabilitation Centre and Physiotherapist I Mr Glen Wong, to share proper driving habits and stretching exercises for drivers.

"Tobacco-free life", "maintain a balanced diet", "wear seat belt properly", "pay attention to health conditions and avoid fatigue driving" and "stay focused, always pay attention to pedestrians" are the five Campaign themes this year. These messages are disseminated to commercial vehicle drivers through various channels and programmes including radio broadcasts, interviews, dramas, interactive games, free health check-ups, and website and social media publicity.

Drivers are welcome to browse the Campaign Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TDSafeDrivingandHealthCampaign) and the dedicated Instagram page (www.instagram.com/safedrivingandhealthcampaign) to obtain more information about road safety, and participate in interactive games with prizes.
