Special traffic and transport arrangements for National Day celebrations

     The Transport Department issued a reminder today (September 29) that a series of special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon for the National Day celebration events on October 1.  

     The arrangements to be implemented for the different events are as follows:

(1) Flag Raising Ceremony cum National Day Reception

     Expo Drive, Expo Drive Central and Expo Drive East in Wan Chai and Convention Avenue eastbound between Expo Drive and Expo Drive East will be temporarily closed to all vehicular traffic from 6am to 11am. The bus terminus, taxi stand and coach metered parking spaces on Expo Drive East will be temporarily suspended. In addition, the taxi stands on Harbour Road and at Wan Chai Ferry Concourse will also be suspended in the morning.

(2) National Day Celebration at Shau Kei Wan

     Road closures and traffic diversions at sections of Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, Oi Lai Street eastbound, Oi Yin Street northbound, Factory Street and other streets in Shau Kei Wan will be implemented from 7.30am to 4.30pm. The metered and motorcycle parking spaces on Kam Wa Street and Wang Wa Street will be temporarily suspended. The carparks on the closed roads will be closed at short notice if considered necessary by the Police.

     Buses of NWFB routes 2 and 720 on their journeys to Sai Wan Ho (Grand Promenade) will be diverted via Mong Lung Street, Tung Hei Road, Oi Lai Street westbound and Oi Yin Street, omitting Aldrich Bay Road and Oi Yin Street. The bus stop on Oi Yin Street northbound outside Oi Chak House, Oi Tung Estate, will be temporarily suspended. GMB of routes 66, 66A and 68, on their journeys to Aldrich Bay, will be diverted via Tung Hei Road, Oi Lai Street westbound, omitting Oi Yin Street and Oi Lai Street eastbound.

(3) Variety Show at Queen Elizabeth Stadium

     The metered and motorcycle parking spaces on Oi Kwan Road opposite to Queen Elizabeth Stadium will be temporarily suspended from 7pm on September 30 to 10pm on October 1.

(4) National Day Fireworks Display

     On Hong Kong Island, temporary road closures and traffic diversions will be implemented in phases from 5pm at Lower Peak Tram Station, Wan Chai North, Wan Chai South, Central and the Peak until re-opening of roads. In Kowloon, temporary road closures and traffic diversions will also be implemented in Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan in phases from 6pm.

     Public transport services will also be strengthened or affected on October 1 as stated below:

MTR services
------------

     Between 7pm and 11.30pm, Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line and Tseung Kwan O Line will be strengthened with a three-minute headway; and Tung Chung Line between Hong Kong and Tsing Yi will be strengthened with a five-minute headway.

     In addition, from 6pm to 10.45pm, Ma On Shan Line will be strengthened with a four-minute headway. The northbound train service of East Rail Line to Sheung Shui will be strengthened between 9.30pm and 11pm.

Tramways
--------

     Frequency will be increased to meet passenger demand if necessary.

Peak Tram service
-----------------

     The service between 7pm and 11pm will be strengthened with an eight-minute headway.

Central-Mid-Levels Escalator
----------------------------

     The service of the Central to Mid-levels Escalator and Walkway System will be extended to 2am on October 2.

Cross Boundary Coach Service
----------------------------

     The terminus of the Cross Boundary Coach Service between Wan Chai and Huanggang at Wan Chai Ferry Bus Terminus will be suspended from 7.30pm to 11pm. During the above period, the terminus will be temporarily relocated to Hennessy Road eastbound under the O'Brien Road footbridge.

Bus services
------------

     The bus termini/stops will be suspended or relocated during the road closure period. Bus routes operating in the road closure areas will be diverted. The service of some bus routes will be enhanced.

GMB
---

     The GMB termini/stands in the vicinity of the road closure areas will be suspended or relocated. Routes operating in the road closure areas will be diverted.

Ferry services
--------------

     Ferry companies will suspend some ferry services, cancel some sailings, strengthen and alter some sailings.

     Members of the public planning to go to the affected areas are advised to use public transport. In cases of traffic congestion, motorists are advised to exercise tolerance and patience, and observe the instructions of the Police. They should also be alert to the latest traffic news broadcasts on TV and radio channels.
