Reminder on renewing full driving licence

The Transport Department today (June 19) reminded licence holders to renew their full driving licences before expiry of the licences.

The 10-year full driving licences, which were introduced in 1997, are due for renewal from this month (June) onwards. Licence holders are reminded to check when their driving licences will expire and make early renewal, as it is an offence to drive without a valid driving licence.  They can renew their licences four months before the expiry date of their current licences or within three years after the expiry of their licences.

"The Transport Department has issued reminder notices and application forms to licence holders whose licences are due to expire in the coming months and will continue this practice," a department spokesman said.

"To save time in queuing at the department's licensing offices for counter services, licence holders are encouraged to complete the application forms and send them together with the required documents and licence fee to the Transport Department by post, or drop them in the collection boxes in the four licensing offices or selected post offices. They can also make their licence renewal through the Internet," he said.

"Applicants, who wish to use the counter services at the licensing offices for renewal, are urged to make advance booking of service slots by dialing the 24-hour booking hotline 3763 8080, or through the Internet at www.gov.hk/en/residents/transport/drivinglicense/abs.htm. Otherwise, the applicant will be given a chit under a walk-in quota when visiting the licensing office and has to queue for service," the spokesman said.
