Launch of Electronic Lantau Closed Road Permit
Members of the public are advised that, in line with the Government's wider adoption of technology in the provision of public services, the electronic Lantau Closed Road Permit will be launched starting from 12.01 a.m. on 31 January 2024 (Wednesday).
If the application for Lantau Closed Road Permit(s) is approved, the Transport Department will notify by email the applicant who has chosen to receive the electronic permit of the application result and issue the electronic permit in "portable document format" (PDF) for downloading and printing. The electronic permit is only applicable to applications involving not more than 10 permits and each application contains one vehicle registration mark.
When the Lantau Closed Road Permit (no matter paper or electronic permit) is in use, the applicant must display clearly the front of the permit on the windscreen inside the vehicle for checking purpose. The electronic permit possesses the same legal status as the paper permit. Applicants should follow the requirements for displaying the print-out of the electronic permit in the same way as the existing paper permit.
In addition, both paper and electronic permits are added with an encrypted "Quick Response code" (QR code) containing the same information as that in the existing paper permit. Since the QR code has been encrypted, the general public cannot read the information contained inside the permit. Police officers can scan the QR codes with mobile devices to authenticate the displayed electronic permit.
At the same time, the prevailing submission channel and services arrangement for applying for paper permits remain unchanged. The existing permits remain valid for use until expiry.
